Chests of this type were made by blacksmiths working alongside locksmiths, drawing on techniques also used in armour and weapons production.

The front is centred by a worked escutcheon with a crowned female mask, flanked by stylised bird forms within scrolling ironwork. While not formal heraldry, it borrows from that visual language, giving the piece a sense of authority.

The side handles are ornamented and particularly strong—hand-forged, with a double-loop form and central collars. Their huge scale and construction reflect the weight of the chest and the need for movement when required.

Inside the lid is the original locking system, a decorated pierced iron plate covering complex mechanism. These chests were designed for secure storage, often with multiple locking elements and controlled access. This piece retains it’s original key which still moves the locking internal teeth.

At this size, the chest moves beyond the domestic. It would have been created for a merchant house, Noble residence, or similar environment where coin, documents, or valuables were held securely.

The surface is consistent and well-aged, with a pitted patina across the iron. The inside has been later re-lined for use.

A strong and purposeful piece, with real presence.

Box size corner to corner: 100 cm wide, 58cm deep.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0633/6007/3956/files/0B46C0AD-F2B2-47BE-B95F-736D20A3E286.jpg?v=1777729189
https://chrisholmesantiques.co.uk/products/a-monumental-17th-century-south-german-iron-strong-chest-c-1650-1700
