A striking niche or external architectural marble depicting Saint John the Baptist wearing a camels pelt with a lamb at his feet. c.1550
The lower Italian inscription roughly translates: “NTRO PROTETO RE ALA CONPAGNIA DIL CARRO DEL VENTO 1612” ‘I protect the Kings wing with the chariot of the winds company‘.
The inscription was added at a later date in 1612.
A superb and dramatic piece created in Renaissance Italy.
