A late 19th Century fine lead Egyptian Revival style Sphinx on plinth.
Heavily influenced by the work and drawings of Thomas Hope (1769-1831) in his ‘Household Furniture and Interior Decoration’ publication. He was renowned for his interior design, particularly the ‘Egyptian Room’ in his home in Duchess Street, Portland Place. The Sphinx has lifelike articulation of form, oozing luxury. Hope’s ornamented designs defined Regency interior fashions, transforming British aesthetic into modern yet classical.
