A wonderful set of four English garden urns, dating to circa 1860–1880, moulded in buff terracotta with elaborate basket-weave decoration. Each is formed as a richly modelled woven basket with twisted handles, a broad foliate rim and substantial pedestal base.
The design belongs to a distinctive strand of 19th-century British terracotta garden pottery, with related wares produced by a number of important English and Scottish factories during the Victorian period. Although unmarked apart from the impressed model number 16, the quality of the moulding suggests manufacture by a substantial commercial pottery.
The set retains layers of old exterior paint and weathering, with a few knocks, small nibbles and old repairs consistent with age and garden use.
