Original painting by Chloë Holt RCA FRSA. One of the youngest artists ever to be elected a member of the RCA. Winner of the 2012 Kyffin Williams Drawing Prize, Chloe also, in 2010 won the International Lorenzo il Magnifico prize by the Florence Biennale for works on paper.
A deeply atmospheric still life exploring the quiet poetry of the handmade object. Sacred Ritual centres upon a tea bowl from Chloë Holt’s private collection — an authentic work by the celebrated Japanese potter Shoji Hamada — rendered through layered passages of oil and gesso that allow the vessel to emerge almost meditatively from its luminous ground.
The painting reflects Holt’s longstanding fascination with the philosophy surrounding the Leach Pottery tradition and the dialogue between British and Japanese studio ceramics. Hamada’s bowls, celebrated for their instinctive beauty and quiet integrity, embody the idea that the everyday object can possess profound spiritual and emotional resonance. Here, the vessel becomes both subject and symbol: a record of the hand, the rhythm of making and the intimacy of ritual.
Executed in a restrained monochromatic palette, the work possesses an almost devotional stillness. The heavily worked surface and shifting passages of light lend the composition an icon-like quality, elevating the humble tea bowl into something timeless and quietly sacred.
