A wonderful and unique Edwardian Oxford University rowing oar presentation blade. d.1901
The oar is the original used during the ‘bumping’ race and was awarded to Magdalen college 2nd Torpid. Any rowing team who recorded four consecutive 'bumps' were said to have earned their oars. This is a superb part of Oxford's history.
Adorned with hand painted typography and the College’s heraldic insignia.
The Coach listed was Henry Hampden Dutton (13 February 1879 – 15 June 1932), he was a South Australian pastoralist and the only member of the rowing team who wasn’t British.
You may find some links to a family member somewhere amongst the names!
