An organically formed terracotta olive oil storage jar from Montelupo, Florence c.1780.
This smooth jar has two shaped handles and inner dark glazing. The patination of time visible on its lichen dappled surface and superb texture. In remarkable original condition. This particular Tuscan terracotta is produced in Montelupo, an ancient town on the outskirts of Florence. The earliest known examples date to c.1720-50 and were produced to ship Italian olive oil to Britain.
The olive oil jars sing of these warmer Mediterranean climes, perfectly creating this feeling within your Italian inspired garden or standing in a traditional English formal garden from which this piece originated.
