A large romantically beautiful Marriage coffer or ‘Rouen Box’ (dit coffret de Rouen) from Normandy c.1800-1840.
Created from polychromed wood gessoed and naively hand-painted with stylised decorative flowers, foliage and kissing birds in a palette of deep prussian blue, cobalt greens and oranges. The surface of the box now has a wonderful patina, it’s paint is softly worn and reveals layers of colour making it even more beautiful.
Marriage coffers, chests or boxes were gifted as part of a Bride’s dowry, this particular coffer has a brilliantly cheery disposition, and truly reflects the celebration and joy of the coupling!
With a working lock and key, to enable the storing of your own treasures.
