An organically formed Mamluk or Safavid Islamic ceramic jar created c.1450
The primitively shaped rising baluster shaped vessel was originally used as a storage or spice jar.
Made from stone-paste or ‘fritware’, the body of the jar is painted under a transparent glaze with blue arabesque strapwork to it’s sides and a decorative collar band around its rim.
The surface of the objects is crackle glazed and patinated over the centuries, with numerous historical repairs maintaining the importance of this piece to its owners and collectors.
Additionally the work bears the signature mark of its maker.
