A beautifully carved and detailed white marble basket of fruit c.1750

This exquisitely carved and realistic basket holds a selection of fashionable, and what would have been rare fruits regarded as a luxury in the 18th Century. Reflecting the passion for Trompe L’œil paintings that were designed to create images to deceive the eye into thinking that the objects were real, and the demand for Grand Tour marble this piece would have been created in England as a highly fashionable and desirable work of art.
