A monumental pair of English late Victorian architectural corner lanterns, retaining their original large-scale character and wonderfully aged surfaces.
Each lantern is constructed with a broad scalloped copper top, now with a rich natural verdigris patina, above a substantial tapering glazed body. Internally, each retains an enamelled reflector plate, strongly suggesting that the lanterns were originally made for gas illumination before later conversion to electricity.
The heavy iron mounting brackets were specifically designed to fit across the external corner of a building, allowing the lanterns to project dramatically from two adjoining wall faces. Their scale, construction and unusual corner-mounted format indicate that they were intended for a substantial architectural setting.
The combination of monumental proportions, scalloped copper work, surviving reflector plates and original architectural brackets makes them particularly striking examples of late Victorian exterior lighting.
