A striking pair of Italian carved marble planters in the form of stylised lotus blossoms, c.1930.
Beautifully hand carved from solid marble, each planter is formed from overlapping lotus petals rising gracefully to an undulating scalloped rim. The sculptural composition reflects the elegant naturalism associated with the Art Deco period, when lotus motifs enjoyed renewed popularity in architecture and the decorative arts.
Carved from pale marble, the surfaces have mellowed beautifully over time, developing a soft toned patina.
