A sublime pair of Early 19th Century Louis XVI Style French Fauteuils. With exceptionally finely carved and gilded frames with fluted supports enhanced with floral decoration, acanthus leaves and embellished with Greek coin bordering. The spring bow-front seats and backs are covered in excellent condition soft pale mint silk damask of fruits and flowers. Louis XVI Style also known as ‘Louis Seize’, was a style of architecture, decoration and art developed during the reign of Louis XVI (1774-1793). Inspired by the discoveries of ancient Roman paintings, sculpture and the architecture of Herculaneum and Pompeii. It was a desire to establish a new ideal of beauty based on classical notions of purity and grandeur of the art of the Ancient Romans and Greeks.
