A matching pair of architectural terracotta Lion head corbels by Northwich maker Jabez Thompson (1838-1911).

Jabez Thompson was the ninth son of John Thompson Senior. The family ran two family businesses, the Alliance Salt Works and the terracotta brickworks on Manchester Road in Northwich, England.

In 1867 he inherited the Brick and Tile Works (established in 1824), whilst his brothers ran the Salt Works.

The Brickworks produced common, fine moulded bricks.  Jabez expanded the works and specialised in skilled hand-worked terracotta, making panels and fine ornamental pieces.  A renowned work is the ‘Last Supper’ Reredos, based on Leonardo’s famous work of art -  one of which was commissioned by Sir Gilbert and Lady Greenall to be installed in the St Michaels and All Angels church at Little Leigh as an altar piece work.

These animated corbels could still be used architecturally or repurposed as book ends or purely decorative objects.
