A pair of marvellously hand-carved and shaped Medieval gable coping stones repurposed as bookends, originally created for York Minster.
These hand-carved pieces would have been made specifically by one of the Stonemasons working on York Minster in the 1500s. They were removed from the Minster during the restoration work after the great fire of 1753 and rested in a private collection in Yorkshire.
Worth noting are the carvings into the face of the stone which once would have held hold lead or mortar to hold them in position.
These wonderful pieces of Medieval history are now repurposed as a pair of sturdy bookends. But with glorious colour and patination, these could be considered works of sculpture in their own right and enjoyed as such.
Two pairs available.
