Pauly & Cie Venetian Grotto Armchair, Venice, Italy, Late 19th Century

An exceptionally rare Venetian grotto armchair by Pauly & Cie, Venice. Representing one of the finest expressions of Venetian decorative art, the chair embodies the firm’s distinctive marine-inspired aesthetic, which made its grotto furniture sought after throughout Europe and America at the turn of the twentieth century.

The chair is conceived entirely in the marine idiom, with a boldly carved scallop-shell seat and back, sweeping dolphin-form arms, and conch shell legs with gilded pearls. The beautifully original decorative surface has survived remarkably well, retaining its layered parcel-gilt polychrome finish with an exceptional depth of patina that enhances the sculptural quality of the carving.

Building upon a decorative tradition that stretched from the Renaissance through the Rococo fascination with shells, marine forms and garden follies, Pauly & Cie developed what became the definitive Venetian interpretation of grotto furniture. Their creations furnished grand conservatories, winter gardens and luxurious interiors, while the firm’s craftsmanship established them as the foremost makers of Venetian grotto furniture. Production of these remarkable designs continued until around 1930.

This design is among the firm’s best documented. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Museum No. W.2-1972), holds an armchair made to the same design and records that an identical chair appears as Item 3019 in Pauly & Cie’s 1904 catalogue, published under the firm’s title “Fabrique de Verreries et Meubles Artistiques.”

Comparable examples are illustrated in Bruce M. Newman’s seminal publication “Fantasy Furniture” (Rizzoli, 1989), widely regarded as the principal study of this remarkable genre. Newman identifies Pauly & Cie as the foremost manufacturers of Venetian grotto furniture, tracing the firm’s production from the late nineteenth century until around 1930. He further records that examples were owned by notable twentieth-century collectors including Helena Rubinstein, María Félix, Indira Gandhi and Henri Matisse, whose appreciation of these extraordinary works reflects their enduring artistic significance.

Today, original Pauly & Cie grotto furniture is recognised as one of the most distinctive and imaginative achievements of Venetian decorative art. With documented examples preserved in museum collections and exceptionally few surviving on the open market, these extraordinary creations remain among the most desirable works produced by the celebrated Venetian firm.
