A remarkable condition Roman Pugio Dagger 1st-2nd Century A.D.

The dagger would have been carried on the left side of the body by a Roman Legionnaire or Soldier, used as a secondary weapon in combat and always worn as a status symbol to show you were part of the Roman Military.

The Legionnaire would have paid for the forging of the dagger himself and it would be considered a very personal item.

Worth noting is the beautifully decorated bronze handle, studded with brass alloy. This piece was designed not only for function to fit snugly into the hand, but also highly decorated as a treasured work of art reflecting the soldiers worth.

Provenance from a private Yorkshire collection.
