A striking life-size carved wooden figure of Saint Peter, provisionally dated to the late 17th or early 18th century, retaining polychrome decoration and gilded details.

Saint Peter stands barefoot, his head raised and turned, with an expressive face framed by deeply carved curls and a flowing beard. His exposed torso contrasts with the substantial mantle, gathered into sweeping folds and edged with gilding. He holds an inverted cross carved to resemble rough timber, while an animated, crowing cockerel stands beside his feet. These attributes recall his martyrdom and his denial of Christ.

The composition appears to derive from Artus Quellinus the Elder’s marble Saint Peter, made around 1659 for the Saboth monument in Antwerp’s Sint-Andrieskerk, suggesting a possible Flemish connection. The sculptor and place of manufacture remain unidentified.

Carved from joined sections of wood, the figure has a deeply hollowed reverse, consistent with placement against a wall or within an architectural setting.

The surface retains layers of colour and gilding, with extensive losses to the painted and gesso decoration, exposing the wood beneath in places.
