A rare and splendid example of Scandinavian Blacksmith's art in the form of a candle holder c.1800

Reminiscent of the Swedish Eel spears which could have easily inspired its form in a society where hunting and fishing were daily activities for many. One can easily imagine the Blacksmith who would have been very well versed in making implements such as the Eel catchers, uprighting the design to create this naive and elegant piece.

A wonderful example of primitive Folk Art, it’s simplicity beautiful. A perfect balance between utility and aesthetics, of form and function.

The meticulously hand-forged holders intended to hold beeswax candles. Additionally, it stands upon four splayed feet with a dart shaped decorative arrow point leading to four flattened iron candle branches.

The piece has a richly colored and patinated scumbled surface, a result of the passage of time and years of use, adding to its character and allure.
