A unique pair of Venetian Guild/Gondolier Ceremonial Processional Staffs. Early 19th century.

Reflecting Venice's rich cultural and ceremonial traditions, and most likely used in religious or civic processions.

They are adorned with intricate metal tokens (tessere), silk wrapping, and elaborate figurative decals featuring classical portraits and the mythological heads of satyrs.

The tokens, or ‘coins’ include inscriptions like "DEFENSE NOS" (Latin for "Defend Us"), suggesting a symbolic or protective purpose, a common feature in Venetian guild objects.
Minted tokens (tessere) were produced from the fourteenth century onwards: a there are rationing tessere, which poor families could then use in purchasing oil and salt; tessere that simply served as tokens in the exchange of goods; and tessere that indicated membership of some particular guild or Venetian Scuola.

The spearhead-shaped iron tops and crescent designs highlight the staffs ceremonial nature, aligning with Venice’s tradition of public displays of devotion and unity. The opulent remnants of silk wrapping speaks of their importance and links to the Silk Road. Such fine materials were often reserved for significant ritual objects in Venetian society.

Whether for collectors, museums, or historians, these rare staffs provide a connection to the grandeur and traditions of the Venetian Republic. Their craftsmanship and symbolism make them a wonderful example of Venetian processional art.
