An incredibly beautiful collection of Butterflies housed in a glass museum case from a European Museum c.1950.
The glass box allows us to view the perfect beauty of species of the family “Papilionidae” This particular case holds many butterflies found in the British isles: Fritillaries; Small White; Emperors - to name a few.
Post-Renaissance the growing interest in Butterfly collecting or studying, related to the expanding knowledge of science, nature and habitat. 1758-1900 was the era of the gentleman scientist, many contributing to the most important Natural history collections in Europe. Explorers during the 19th Century were major sources of specimens and knowledge. During this period large collections of Lepidoptera flooded Europe, with museums such as: the British Museum; Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Histoire; and the Museum für Naturkunde - housing the largest variety and new species.
